Watching Puppies

Over at Breitbart you can link to a site with six very active puppies. They play, they fight, they sleep, they poop, they .... Are they getting enough to eat? They look healthy. But, they are very curious puppies.

Firstborn says it is snowing at their house. It was a gorgeous day here. I walked around the block, and did not sweat much at all. Found two quarters. Then I walked later and picked up half a sack of trash. Stinky beer cans.

Bob beat me at Scrabble. 317 to 268. Bob bingo-ed once, but I played ZOOLOGIES.

Jupiter and Venus are getting closer and closer. Spaceweather.com has the star charts, and on Dec. 1st, the moon will join them in a very close conjunction.

Fun to see so many floating men and women in the space station.

Friday Night Launch

Just watched a beautiful night launch of the space shuttle. We watched as we played Scrabble. It was a close game. We were tied 265 at the next to the last plays. Bob pulled ahead and went out first. 284 to 272

Marie Calendar skillet meal with artichokes, and whole wheat rolls. Warm rolls sure made Bob's dimples appear. He was so excited, that he let me pray!

Cool front came on through today. It got real windy about 4pm, and I had to start shutting windows.

Two nights in a row ! 303-287

Wow---two nights in a row I have beaten Bob at Scrabble. That has to be a first.

And he bingo-ed twice !!

330 to 271 I won !

This has been your daily Scrabble report. Mom beat Dad, 330 to 271. Poor Dad drew bad, bad hands. I ended up with five "I"s.

How was my day, you ask? I got up early to the smell of coffee brewing because I remembered to set the coffee maker on auto start last night. Bob worked in Fort Worth today, so he did not have to go so early. I headed to Walmart and got some grocery shopping done. Bob asked me to pick up some more rye grass seed. I walked into the garden department at Walmart first thing. Their garden center is quickly turning into Christmas central. But, Bob told me where he found the grass seed a few weeks ago, so I headed there, but no seed. Lots of fertilizer left. And a worker pushing a grocery cart of bags he had taken off the shelves...so I wandered over to him and asked where the seed was. He told me to my face that they were out. Did not have any. I pointed to the seed bags in his cart, and said, I want those two. He reluctantly pulled them out. To. My. Face. Amazing. Thankfully, I had watched my four year old nephew yesterday, so it was fresh in my mind how four year olds say, "no" to save time.

Armed with victuals, I headed home, ate breakfast, put groceries away, and later Bob called home saying he needed something from home, and so I made him lunch. Bertolli bag and a bag of frozen corn. It is so rare for him to come home for lunch. Armed with quarters, he went back to downtown Fort Worth.

Boring enough yet? It was a beautiful day. Leaves falling at a steady rate. Kinda overcast until later when the sun came out and fluffy clouds drifted slowly by. I got a dishrag knitted watching Brietbart TV. They featured a most disturbing story about a church in Lansing, Michigan targeted by criminals last Sunday who disrupted their Sunday morning service chanting, yelling, pulling the fire alarm, making out on the stage in front of the shocked pastor. Sadly, former members or members children raised there that knew the layout, and how to get to the upper level to release a banner. It is a crime to pull a fire alarm, isn't it??

What would our church do if attacked? How do your drown out deviants? How do you fight back? I noticed the same symbols used by criminals during the holocaust. They can't come up with anything original. Have we learned nothing from history?

Catering to the teens and being afraid to harm their self-esteem hasn't worked out so well, has it. Wonder where the criminals got the money for banners, outfits, megaphones, glitter...some school that uses the word, "like" a lot. Such tolerance. not.

Time to open the Bible and read the book of Romans again.

362-242 I won !!!

Bob recited the day ritual for James:

He gets on a train, and goes to work, and at 4:50pm, he calls me and says he is headed home. He walks in the door at 6:10pm and I have a hot meal ready and waiting. Then we play Scrabble. And James calls. And I knitted a dishrag while we played Scrabble.

Since I gave a box-of-dishrags to a friend at church Sunday morning, I knitted one for my sink, and five more to give away to someone.

I don't want to forget Bob smooching me on the back of my neck while I was making coffee this morning. I have been thinking about that all day.

Thirty-one years ago we met, and started writing letters to each other, and a Scrabble board was one of our first purchases as a married couple. We did not play much when the boys were little. But, now we try to play each day. And every once in a while, I win ! Bob lets me have as many letters as I want. I can make big words. And there are funny two letter words we use a lot to build other words. Tonight, I wondered, what does OE mean?? (a whirlwind off the Faeroe islands)

Bob 407, me 209

Scrabble score.

We went to church. We ate lunch with Ben-Ben. fish. We caulked and painted. Rather, Bob caulked and painted. I was his assistant. I fetched stuff, and held the paper towels. And I was very useful in remembering where a certain tool was hidden. We hide stuff in the garage so that they do not walk off. Some tools come in these handy suitcases, and have been known to grow legs and walk away. I swear I am going to write what they are in big letters with a permanent marker. 'Cause Bob will ask, "where is the band saw?" And I have to hold up a few suitcased tools, and possibilities before I get the right one. Or, I will unearth the suitcased tool, and ask, "is this it?" Bob's old boss once made fun of us when he noticed our washer and dryer labeled in big letters when our boys were little. But, he has not been in our garage in years, so I think its safe to label stuff for my brain. Why don't tool come labeled?? "Stanley" did not help me locate the awl.

Now the house looks better. There are a few places left to sand and paint, but Bob will wait for a cooler day. It got hot out there this afternoon. I got so sweaty-sticky, that I took a bath before Scrabble.

I gave the lady at church sixteen dishrags. Hope she likes them. Hope she finds a color she likes. And she said she wanted to give some at Christmas.

The sermon this morning was on Amos 6. Danger of complacency. Arrogance. And abusing poor people.

Lots of sirens tonight. Wonder what is going on.

284-281

Bob went out first, and bingo-ed once, but I beat him by three points. It has been a while since I have won at Scrabble. And Bob lets me have as many letters as I want.

Bob re-installed the vents in the overhang thingies. We had run them through the dishwasher to remove twenty years of dust and grime after a good hand scrubbing. Every time Bob uses his cordless screwdriver we remember the story of taking toddlers to the hardware store. When we were not looking, baby Ben pulled a cordless screw driver off the shelf and into our cart. When we got up to the checkout, Bob thought I had put it in the cart as a gift to him. I did not know he had been wanting one, and this was when they had first been invented, and to me, sounded wussy.

We had eaten cereal for supper, and even though that is quick, we only had 45 minutes before sundown to get the screens re-installed. Four little screws each. By dusk's early light...and the step stool, and the ladder for the end of the house.

I am still having trouble standing up straight, even though I went to the chiropractor the other day. Oh, well. Yesterday, I went out to lunch with my friend and her cute little 2 year old grandson, but my back was hurting before we were done. She had seen the yarn we use on sale at Michael's for one dollar each, and we could not resist stocking up on my favorite colors. I am well-stocked on yarn now. This should last me through the winter ! It sure was nice paying one dollar for the cream color instead of 1.69 !!! And I usually do not buy the smaller skeins at 1.69, but at one dollar, I picked up a few "stripes". And I don't know when I have had so many shades of green in stock. These will make pretty dishrags.

It is Friday. I'd love to blog about female stuff, but it would gross out people. I am convinced there is a female/menstrual connection to my back hurting.

And what is it with memory tricks in your fifties?? Bob and I don't dare buy milk and set it in the back seat. We will get distracted somehow one the way home and forget to take the milk out of the back seat and put it in the frig ! What is with that?? And I will make notes to myself and leave them all over the place...and then forget to read the notes. So, I ride home from Braum's (milk purchase place) with a gallon of milk between my legs. Too funny. We are losing our minds.

Scrabble

Scrabble on Sunday,
Scrabble on Monday,
Scrabble at suppertime.
Won't you play Scrabble?
And he bingo-ed twice tonight.

And a good rain this morning. A little shower this afternoon. More tonight? Warnings on the radio all around us.

And a lady at church called wanting some dishrags.

And I got to play with a toddler this morning, as my friend had to attend a funeral of her next door neighbor. Her grandson is such an easy one to watch. Easily entertained with our bin of toys. He wanted to connect the trains to their cars. And he liked climbing onto the bar stool and jumping on me in the rocker. Too cute. Big brown eyes. He wanted to play outside so much, but it was raining, so we had to stay inside.

It is fun to spoil little kids. Let them have three bowls, three cups, three little sandwiches. And he wanted me to sit and eat with him. Little kids are so social. Learning all the time. Observing how the world works, and not at all scared of the toy elephant that moves and makes noise. He was able to find the button on his own with just a few showings.

Time to go throw the clothes in the dryer.

Cake

One of my favorite sites to check each day is Cake Wrecks. It is funny, well written, and the comments are hilarious.

All that reading about cake, even ugly cakes, and I was in the mood for cake.

Pepperidge Farm has a few offerings. A coconut concoction of three layers, but when I scraped off the icing, the cake was kind of tasteless.

I looked up a recipe on the website called: Cooking For Engineers. The pecan coffeecake sounded good, and while I did not have any pecans, it would help me use up my jar of blueberry jelly and Braum's new cream cheese that has a soupy consistency. Not being able to waste Braum's cream cheese, I figured I could cook with it, and I could not very well enjoy my blackberry jam until we had used up all the blueberry.

My Mother will laugh and shake her head to know I used a recipe as the basis of a creation. To me, recipes are the start, the jumping off place. I was kinda surprised that the cupcakes fell. They taste pretty good. I suspect my dough was too thick. And I did use three eggs instead of two. More protein, right?

Now I have plenty of ugly muffins/cupcakes in the freezer, and one shaped like the pyrex measuring cup as I had way too much batter. Maybe it would have been better to make or shape the dough into those crispy cakes you dunk in coffee. When the name come to me, I'll insert it here.

It has been eight days since we played Scrabble. Yikes. While supper was in the microwave, I set up the board and pulled the table into the middle of the living room floor so that we would not forget to play tonight. Some women meet their husbands wrapped in saran wrap. I meet mine with the Scrabble board at the ready.

Bob and I were tied at 261 each, but he went out first, so he played a final word for eight more points, and got my eight points from tiles I had left. Strange looking board. I was racking my brain for words that end in "C" or "P".

And its always a good day when I find my Lily Sugar'n Cream yarn on sale at Walmart for $1 each. I hope Walmart is not discontinuing the yarn. Maybe they were getting rid of an overage.

Scrabble

Middle son tells us that listening to us play Scrabble is like watching paint dry. Bob suggested that maybe he meant listening to paint dry?? But, no, middle son says that is quieter. But, it is not every night that I fill Bob's tummy with yummy steak, and whup his behind at Scrabble. Tonight I laid a word across two double words scores. Whoop. I have started storing the calculator under the board within easy reach. Nineteen times four---Bob does it in his head so quick.

Maybe we need to take a picture of our Scrabble board after a game and post them online ! Wouldn't that be fun ! Tonight, Bob started the game with OVA. Yikes. I made it OVATIONS just to stretch out the board a little and give us more options. Bob bingo-ed twice with PATHOGEN and UNRULED. It was easy to add an S to his PATHOGEN, but a more fun addition came when I saw that I could add an N to TOW and made TOWN and DEFAMING.

It never ceases to amaze me that each board looks different. I did add AMAZED to a triple, too !
And I got rid of that pesky J with REJOINED on a triple word score. 396 to 311

Huge Cones of Yarn

Huge cones of cotton yarn arrived in the mail on Saturday evening from my dear friend in Ennis. We had each mailed each other a box on Friday. I sent her knitted dishrags. And she sent me yarn to make more and money for postage. Wow. One lady she knows down there wants twenty in "shaded denim". It is a pretty, soothing color. I am trying to remember to keep track on the inside of the cardboard cone with little marks exactly how many one of these huge cones make. A regular ball of yarn, solid color makes two. These cones sure feel heavier than a pound. (it saith pound on the label)

Three down, and seventeen to go. I am glad my friend is finding all the dishrags I knit good homes down there in Ennis.

And we played a couple of games of Scrabble today since Bob was done with his Sunday School lesson. The word, JAWBONED, lays across two triples very nicely for 153 points. At first, I was going to be happy to just lay JAW on one triple in the upper left hand corner, but then I saw the opportunity to make it a compound word. Bob bingo-ed with SARDINES during the first game.

We ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch. And McDonald's premium salads for supper. Chick-fill-you-up salads are better, and bigger, but Chick-fill-you-up is not open on Sunday.

Adventures in Scrabble

UNHALTERING is a word. "Where is your grandpa?" "Oh, he is in the barn unhaltering the pony."

Great way to begin a Scrabble game as it reached the triple from the middle ! To keep my mind engaged, my dear husband lets me have more tiles. He bingoes away each game with his seven, so don't feel sorry for him. And if I find a word in the Scrabble dictionary, its fair game. And if in a hurry to check out a big word, I find it on the internet in multiple articles, I can usually get away with it.

I am constantly amazed how that every time we play, it is an almost completely different board. Soon, we may join the ranks of taking pictures of our "art" and recording for posterity (history sitting down?) our amazing boards. (almost an oxymoron)

Time for a new Scrabble Dictionary

Time for a new Scrabble Dictionary...to be printed, that is.

Words found in the old King James should be included, in my opinion. Words found in any hymnal should also be included. And the new computer terms, like "email" and "blog".

Come on, Milton Bradley Company. It's been since 1995 and that is over thirteen years now. An online version would be nice, as we could use the computer for a reference most games.

Scrabble

My husband loves to play Scrabble. I think the game was one of our first purchases as a newly married couple. I enjoy playing the game as long as I can make big words. And since my husband is so much better at it, he allows me to use more tiles so that I can give him some competition. We also use the Scrabble dictionary. And we trade out the blanks. I am not allowed to "bingo" but my husband usually bingoes at least once or twice a game. I recently had the opportunity to triple-triple: Laying an eight-letter word on the triple squares that are only found on the edge of the board.

I got stuck with the letter, Q early on in the game, and it took a while to draw the needed "U" or blank. Then the letters appeared where I could spell, "QUIXOTIC" but there are not many opportunities to add a "C" to join another word and build off it in order to play. That is when I noticed the word, "QUIXOTRY" in the Scrabble dictionary. And dear husband covered one opportunity on the right edge, but when I played a throw away hand to set up the bottom edge, he saw through my deviousness, but relented and did not block me again.

My husband was able to lay a triple-triple the next game with the word, "SECTIONED" using two blanks, and because he not only triple-tripled, but bingoed, he was one happy camper !

Since our kids are grown, it is safe to leave the game out on the coffee table for all to see, admire, and tempt for another game. When the youth pastor agreed to come home with our son a week ago for an impromptu supper, as I threw supper in the microwave, I asked Bob to make the bed, and scan the Scrabble board for naughty words.

I want to always remember how one time our son played the word, LINGERIE, and we did not even realize he could spell it, let along know what it means. We still laugh about that one.

QUIXOTRY gave me 252 points for that one play. I don't often play that much for a whole game. We have begun saving our score sheets, and have a years worth now. And although the weather was beautiful on Saturday, I think we played three games. And set a candle going in case we needed it during the storms yesterday as we played a few more.

Our Scrabble addiction has overflowed into other areas of our lives. When driving around, we amuse ourselves with word possibilities on Texas license plates.
